Bayard-Condict Building

Designated a National Historic Landmark of New York City on 12/8/1976.

Landmark Description

Built in 1897-99, this is twelve-story building one of the first skyscrapers in New York City. It is the only work by Sullivan in the East other than the Prudential Building in Buffalo. The piers and mullions of its terra-cotta façade emphasize the vertical nature of the building. The top stage is embellished with the elaborate and bold ornament combining classical figures with lavish foliar motifs typical of Sullivan's work. The Landmark underwent an extensive restoration in 2003.
