New York Public Library

Designated a National Historic Landmark of New York City on 12/21/1965.

Landmark Description

Completed in 1911, the Library is a Beaux-Arts matsterpiece designed by architects Carrere and Hastings. On either side of a monumental stairway, two stone lions, sculpted by Edward Clark Potter, guard the main entrance to one of the world's great research institutions. The library was formed when several libraries consolidated at the turn of the 20th century. Generous bequests from New Yorkers over the years have endowed it with operating funds and with extensive and invaluable manuscript and rare book collections.

LOC Historic American Building Survey
The permanent collection of architectural, engineering and landscape documentation at the Library of Congress consists of measured and interpretive drawings, large-format black and white and color photographs, written historical and descriptive data, and original field notes. The collection captures the American experience through approximately 40,000 recorded historic structures and sites, from American Indian cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde to space-age technology at Cape Canaveral.
