The Lower East Side is an area of Manhattan where many of the immigrants first settled. You can walk along old Orchard Street where the Jewish immigrants first established the garment industries of NYC. Although today many different ethnic groups occupy the area, it has retained the old world feel.

Take in the Lower East Side Tenement Museum on Delancy Street. The museum recreates the living conditions of the early immigrants in the city. The Lower East Side is also the entrance point for the Williamsburg Bridge. Today you can find many trendy bars, restaurants and shops around Allen Street. On Sunday you can walk the outdoor markets of Orchard Street.

Visit the Eldridge Street Synagogue, an architecturally interesting site that is currently undergoing restoration. The not-for-profit Eldridge Street Project was incorporated in 1986 to restore the long neglected building to its original grandeur. A few blocks away you can venture into Little Italy and Chinatown. These areas are definitely worth a visit.
