New York was home to the very first department store in the United States, Marble Dry Goods
Palace, which opened in 1846. Brooks Brothers is the oldest surviving clothier in the United
States, dating back to the 1818. Other long-standing department stores that originated in
NYC are: Lord & Taylor (1826), Macy's (1858), Bloomingdales (1861), and Saks Fifth Avenue
(1924). All made significant contributions to the growth of the city over the decades. When
